WA L&I warns homeowners of seasonal asphalt paving scam
TUMWATER – As spring temperatures rise, the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) is warning Washington homeowners of a seasonal asphalt paving scam that may pressure you to repair your driveway.
The scam typically works by a friendly representative approaching a homeowner offering to repave a driveway for a great price, claiming they have just enough asphalt left over from another job nearby. The representatives are usually polite, drive nice work vehicles and can be very persuasive.
But the job they do usually isn’t up to homeowner’s expectations. Materials and workmanship are often subpar.
“Every summer we see these pavers work their way around the state, usually in rural neighborhoods where they think they’re less likely to be caught,” said Rich Ervin, L&I’s program manager for contractor registration. “By the time homeowners realize their new driveway is falling apart, the pavers are long gone and untraceable.”
While L&I has not had reports of traveling pavers in the state this season, L&I wants homeowners to be advised of the scam before they are approached.
“Be wary of anybody offering contracting services door-to-door,” said Ervin. “Take time to research your home improvement project and don’t fall victim to high pressure sales tactics.”
L&I has guidelines for hiring the best contractor at www.HiringaContractor.lni.wa.gov. Always check that your contractor is registered, bonded, and insured before beginning work on your home.
